€3,175 – the average amount of funding for ERASMUS mobility in 2024/25
Statistics from Goethe University’s Global Office (GO) and the German Academic Exchange Service’s (DAAD) BintHo – Benchmark International University survey show that the traditional semester abroad remains the most popular form of international mobility among students at German universities. With support from the Global Office as well as the program coordinators in the faculties and institutes, such a stay can be easily organized through the ERASMUS program: Students apply both for a place at a partner university and for financial support.
Launched by the EU in 1987, ERASMUS has become even more attractive in recent years:
Ten years ago, Goethe University students received an average of about €1,330 as part of ERASMUS mobility funding to study at a partner university. Since then
- the funding rates of the three country groups have been increased several times,
- special funding for participants with disabilities or children has been supplemented by additional social top-ups for employed participants who take a sabbatical from work and participants from non-academic backgrounds. These groups receive an additional €250 of funding per month.
- In addition, there is funding for additional travel days caused by green arrival and/or departure.
As a result, the average ERASMUS mobility funding has risen to approximately €3,175 per mobility in the 2024/25 academic year.
- To make green travel even more attractive, from 2025/26 onwards there will now be a travel allowance awarded according to the distance category, which will be significantly higher for green mobility than for air travel, for example.
ERASMUS can also be combined with foreign BAföG (student financial assistance under the Federal Training Assistance Act) and a “Germany Scholarship” scholarship, among others.
These measures taken by the EU and the DAAD have resulted in increased interest, meaning that this year, for the first time, more than 700 Goethe University students have been nominated for one or two semesters abroad at one of over 300 ERASMUS partner universities.
